1. THE LARGEST MUSEUM IN SOUTH EAST ASIA..





Acclaimed as the largest museum in South East Asia, the Terengganu State Museum Complex houses century old artefacts and artworks of rich and colourful heritage. Located on 27 hectares of land in Bukit Losong, Kuala Terengganu, the complexes itself are an impressive architectural feat, based on the designs of Terengganu’s old palace.

It comprises a Main Museum, a Maritime Museum, a Fisheries Museum, 4 traditional houses and botanic and herb gardens. The Main Museum is built on 16 concrete stilts with galleries showcasing textiles and weaving techniques, traditional weapons, crafts, historical, royal regalia’s, nature, petroleum development, Islamic arts, new generation and contemporary arts. The other 4 blocks are adjoined, to represent a large family. At the main entrance of the main complex, lays the famous original Batu Bersurat of Terengganu.

Visitors from hotels could contact any of the local travel agencies to arrange for a fun Kuala Terengganu Town Tour which includes visit to the State Museum. Or fancy the traditional boat cruise along the Terengganu River that also stops at the State Museum.

Ticket counter is available at the Shahbandar Jetty opposite the General Post Office. Ticket priced at RM5.00 per person. For those wishing to drive themselves to the Museum, they have to take the route to Kampung Losong which is famous for its keropok lekor, a famous local delicacy. From there the majestic looking museum stood on top of the Bukit Losong.

Traditional boat builders of Terengganu are famous for their skills, techniques and materials that withstand the test of time. The designs and blueprint are conceptualized from memory and learning skills passed down through generations. The modern touch while maintaining the traditional concepts of intricate details and precision are internationally recognised and continue to be a part of Terengganu's rich and vibrant heritage.


3. THE WORLD RENOWNED EMERALD ISLANDS IN MALAYSIA


Every year between March and October, sun and sea lovers from the world over never fail to make pilgrimage to some of the most beautiful islands in South East Asia. And they are all situated off the coast of Terengganu, an east coast state of Peninsular Malaysia. 4. TERENGGANU TAPESTRY - SONGKET , BATIK AND SILK




SONGKET
The origins of the many different colourful and traditional textile are lost in antiquity. The art of songket weaving consist of using traditional heirloom to make intricate songket brocade through painstaking weaving with gold or silver threads. Songket is a rich fabric that is worn only on auspicious occasions and used to be the textiles of royalty. It is now the headgear of Sultans, Chief Ministers and the State's Cabinet members.

BATIK
Hand drawn batik is an exquisite and delicate art which requires skill, patience, meticulousness, flair and creativity. Batik is intrinsic to the fashion world, be it in cotton or silk or in the making of sarongs, crafts, pareos, shirts, shorts, handbags, purses and even shoes. Terengganu batik shows originality and is not commercialized thus, retaining its price for the quality of the material and the elegance of the designs.

SILK
Approximately 6 Km south of Kuala Terengganu is Sutera Semai-Malaysia's pioneer silk weaving centre. It offers insights into silk production, from the spinning into yarns, to textile weaving and batik printing. You can also see how batik designs are printed producing beautiful shirts, kaftans, scarves, handkerchief, etc.



5. TERENGGANU ARTS AND CRAFTS




During the reign of earlier Terengganu Sultanates, master woodcraftsmen earn the privilege of designing the royal abodes. Their skills and flair in creating masterpiece wood carvings which, other than beautifies it, also shows the wealth and ranks of the owners. Such arts replicate the uniqueness of the local florals around.

REBANA UBI

Before the age of modern telecommunications, the rebana ubi, or giant drums, were used to communicate across vast distances. Wedding announcements, danger warnings, and other newsworthy items were drummed out using different beats. The rebana ubi are now used primarily as ceremonial instruments.


6. TRADITIONAL CULTURE


Be entranced by folk dances that evoke spirits. Be entertained by traditional games that spin fun and excitement. You can look forward to all these and more in Terengganu, an east coast state of Peninsular Malaysia. Terengganu's culture mosaic captures the spirit of taditional Malaysia which has evolved over centuries with little change.


- ULEK MAYANG




The ulek mayang is a pre-Islamic religious trance dance accompanied by singing and music in Terengganu, originating from an unknown nearby island in which the Malay orchestra, comprising drums, gong, violin and accordian is used (Shafiee Ahmad 1992).

Tarian Ulek Mayang is another worshiping dance in the Malay dances. The dancing always begins with a person who is suffering from illness either when he catches fish, in the paddy field or any other daily activities in the society.

The patient will then healed by a bomoh, a traditional Malay doctor in the traditional way. Seven actors beautifully dressed represent the 7 princesses who come to visit the patient when the bomoh is treating him. Kemayan will be burnt together with chanting of pantun and dancing through the whole performance. Sometimes the rebab and seruling are also used to accompany the singing which is in the form of rhymes and poems

Although Tarian Ulek Mayang was once a folk ritual ceremonial in the Malay society, with its gentle and graceful movement, it has become one of the beautiful traditional dancing in Terengganu culture.


- GAMELAN




Tarian Gamelan was rather a royal dance and is originally played during the sultanate of Riau-Lingga and subsequently was brought to the Malay land by Sultan Ahmad of Pahang state. It was then introduced to Terengganu state when the Tengku Meriam, daughter of Sultan Ahmad married with the prince of Sultan Zainal Abidin II in Terengganu. It was said that Tarian Gamelan has altogether 39 different dances of which part of these are created by Tengku Ampuan Meriam herself from the stories of she heard from story tellers.

Eight ladies all in colourful silk costume will be accompanied by some musical instrument such as serunai, gambang, saron, bonang, kenong, gendang ibu and gendang anak to perform the story.
Malay gamelan music is usually played during royal and formal occassions and that performers are specially trained in royal palaces. Among the musical instruments played are the Gong Agong, Gong Sawokan, Gendang Ibu, Gendang Anak, Saron Pekin, Saron Baron I, dan Saron Baron II, Gambang and Kenong.


7.THE WORLD'S OLDEST CENGAL TREE




Situated near the border of Taman Negara, this huge forest reserve is home to the world's largest Chengal tree. It is estimated to be around 1,300 years old with a diameter of 16.75 meters and a height of 65 meters.

The wood of Chengal trees is mainly used for building purposes as it is known to be extremely durable. A highly exciting destination for nature lovers and the adventurous, Pasir Raja is blessed with clean, fresh air, countless wildlife, magnificent flora and fauna, numerous winding streams, rapids and a waterfall. It is a perfect setting for jungle trekking, swimming and relaxing.



8. MALAYSIA'S LARGEST PHEASANT FARM OF AJIL / BURUNG KUANG




Pheasant belong to a family that includes some of the most beautiful birds in the world. Ajil Pheasant Park is the largest breeding farm in Malaysia and was certified by the Malaysia Book Of Records and it is hatching out hundreds of pheasant's chicks every year. Now Ajil Pheasant Park is having more than 30 species of protected pheasants from all over the world including the magnificent Peafowls.

Located in 1.7 acres along the way to Kuala Berang and Kenyir lake will give you the real close encounters with the rarest pheasants from all over the world.


9. THE LONGEST PANORAMIC BEACHES IN MALAYSIA




Tanjung Jara embraced by the blue-green waters of the South China Sea, this is one of the more striking beaches. Long, wide stretches of golden sands sloping gently into the greenish blue waters are prominent.

Apart from its breathtaking sunsets, its openness to the powerful waves from the South China Sea creates fascinating sand dunes. Steady winds and reasonably dramatic surf provide an exciting and diverse array of water activities, such as wind surfing, boating and sailing, while the wide, open waters permit kayaking, snorkeling, deep-sea fishing and diving.

Located here is the Tanjung Jara Beach Resort. Styled after a Malay palace, but with all the modern amenities one could wish for, the resort is the recipient of the prestigious Aga Khan award for the best hotel architecture. Seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher took a well-deserved break there after a disastrous season opener in Melbourne. Guests get a taste of the Malay way of life from the wooden chalets and herb garden to traditional spa treatments.


- RANTAU ABANG

At 22km north of Kuala Dungun and 80km south of Kuala Terengganu, it is probably the most talked about tourist spot in Terengganu. There was a time when a great number of giant leatherback turtles came to Rantau Abang to lay their eggs between May and August. (Peak egg laying months are June and July).





Rantau Abang beaches are well-known for its turtles. In fact, the state of Terengganu's penchant to associate itself with turtles started here in Rantau Abang. Nonetheless, this beautiful beach makes up for it. The water is crystal clear and enticing enough for a swim. You could also climb the giant boulder rock, admiring its geological formation of different sedimentary layers throughout millions of years. Also it provides an amazing bird's eye view of the beach.

For more information on the leatherbacks, there is a Turtle Information Centre managed by the Department of Fisheries at Rantau Abang. The rangers have been patrolling the beaches to ensure safety for the turtles when they come onto shore to lay their eggs. The centre is open every day except Friday and public holidays.


10. KENYIR LAKE - SOUTH EAST ASIA'S LARGEST MAN - MADE LAKE

Tasik Kenyir is the largest man-made lake in Southeast Asia, spanning 260,000 hectares. It is also Malaysia's largest rock filled hydroelectric dam. When the area was flooded, most of the hills were above the water level, thus creating about 340 man-made islands.

The rainforest that cradles the area bestows the lake with an incredible assortment of flora and fauna including rare ferns, exotic orchids, hornbills, elephants, and panthers. It is believed that the area is the home for more than 8,000 species of flowers, 2,500 species of plants and trees, 800 species of orchids, and 300 species of fungus.

Tasik Kenyir is located about 55 km inland of Kuala Terengganu and is the largest man-made lake in the world. Spanning over 260,000 hectares, it is a popular destination for nature lovers as it is surrounded by lush tropical rainforest. Upon the completion of hydroelectric dam, the water level rises creating 340 islands, more than 14 lovely waterfalls and a few rapids and rivers. Pengkalan Gawi jetty has boat services for island trips and resort transfers.

Tasik Kenyir is also a gateway to Taman Negara through Tanjung Mentong. It is also an angler’s haven as the lake is home to hundreds of species of freshwater fish like Baung, Toman, Kelisa, Lampam and Kelah. Accommodation varies from a 3 star resort, chalets on the islands, floating resort or houseboats where rooms and meals are provided. The houseboat travels to waterfalls and fishing sites proving an exhilarating adventure for nature lovers.


11. MALAYSIA'S HIGHEST WATERFALL




Hutan Lipur Sungai Chemerung is the biggest Hutan Lipur and is located beside the river of the Forest Reserve of Pasir Raja, in Dungun. The forest reserve is a hill forest that is blessed with abundant of are many unique of flora and fauna that can be found here. The forest reserve is rich with the meranti and keruing tree which create an interesting background to the Hutan Lipur.

Hutan Lipur Sungai Chemerung is one of the most famous Recreational Forest in Malaysia as uniquely, it is the home of the highest waterfall in Malaysia; the Chemerung Waterfall and the world two largest and oldest Cengal tree and the most beautiful and scenic Recreational Forest in the whole peninsular Malaysia.

As you are approaching the recreational forest from far a way you will see along strict of white colour in the middle of the green valley. The closer you get to it you will see a towering white water gushing down from the valley like a stairway to heaven.

The Chemerung Waterfall is a 305m high beautiful and magnificent waterfall which lay at the wall of East Coast Mountain Range. The 305 meters of gushing white water streaked down to the many beautiful steep rock faces before smashing into a cloud of spray all around the waterfall as is the whole place are still in the early morning mist.

The Hutan Lipur Sungai Chemerung is the favourite resting spots in Malaysia and Terengganu with almost two thousand visitors almost every weekend or during the holiday season. The are a lot of ammenities here that are prepared by the Forestry Department. The are many resting hut or “Wakaf” that are built around the place, a high observation tower can also be found here for the many nature lover who want to see the many animal that frequently visit the salt area here.




A picnic trip at Hutan Lipur Sungai Chemerung is the most ideal thing to do here as this will bring and tighten the family together and ease the body to relax from the stressful weeks of long hour works.


12. ONE OF THE SPECTACULAR FIREFLY SANCTUARY IN MALAYSIA





Located about half an hour from the town of Chukai in Kemaman, Yak Yah River is home to one of the biggest firefly colonies in Malaysia. As dusk falls, flashing fireflies can be found throughout the 13-km long river, with the best sights at spots around 5km from the jetty. Some trees along the river bank may harbour over a thousand fireflies.

The Sungai Yak Yah Firefly Sanctuary is the biggest fire sanctuary in Malaysia which is located about half an hour from the town of Chukai in Kemaman. The appreciation activities can be done all around the year except from the month of October to January and the best time to go here for firefly appreciation activities is from July to September, which is the mating season for the firefly.

Almost everyday when the dusk falls the colourful firefly will crowded the area with glitter like neon light throughout the 13km long Yak Yah river. The best place to marvel or taking picture and the best spots for firefly appreciation is around 5 km from the jetty. Here you will be astounded to see the many berembang and putat trees there, along the river bank lit up like Christmas tree with thousand of fireflies.
